New sunrise industries eyed to generate 500,000 jobs
THE government is considering the development of new “sunrise industries” that could readily employ at least 500,000 people directly and follow the path of the business-process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Trade Secretary Gregory L. Domingo said some of the initial sectors they were looking at were automotive, coconut and tourism.
“We would like to find the new BPO, the new sunrise industries that can eventually contribute directly to half-million employment or more,” Domingo said.
Domingo is partly credited for the rise of the BPO sector, which is seen to employ 1 million people in two years in the country,
He was head of the Board of Investments (BOI) in the early 2000s that prepared the master plan and incentives scheme for IT and IT-enabled services.
Domingo said while the creative industry may qualify as a sunrise industry, its scale might not be able to provide 500,000 direct jobs.
“Tourism has the biggest potential because we already have the natural resources and we just have the put in the infrastructure,” Domingo said.
He also said outside of the airports, the other requirements on the infrastructure side can be addressed by the private sector.
Coconut also has strong potentials, which is why the government is now organizing a Coconut Summit, according to Domingo.
As for automotive, he said, this can also generate the employment level being sought by the government, similar to what Thailand experienced when it developed its 1-ton pickup-truck program.
“We are scrutinizing each sector to see where the potential is,” he said.
The Department of Trade Industry has set a target of generating at least 1 million jobs each year up to 2016 to be able to erase unemployment in the country.
